Is X Premium Worth It for Growing an Audience?
What each X Premium tier changes for your replies, your own posts and your payouts, what X's open-source ranker shows, and when paying makes sense for a small account.

For a small account that replies a lot, a cheap tier is worth a month's test. X says replies from verified accounts get a slight preference in conversations, and that's the one thing Premium does for growth that you can't get another way. It won't push your own posts in the For You feed: X's open-source ranker has no boost for subscribers.
Growth videos for X often treat the checkmark as step one, with claims that without it nobody sees your replies. Here's what X itself says each tier does, what its published code shows, and what the payout program asks for now that it has changed.
What each tier gets you
X's help center lists three Premium tiers. US prices on the web:
| Basic | Premium | Premium+ | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $3 | $8 | $40 |
| Yearly | $32 | $84 | $395 |
| Checkmark | No | Yes, after review | Yes, after review |
| Reply prioritization | Yes | Larger | Largest |
| Original Content Rewards | No | Can apply | Can apply |
| Ads | No change | Reduced | None on most of X |
Every tier can edit a post within an hour and write posts of up to 25,000 characters instead of 280. These are web prices; X sets them per country.
The X Subscription. In October 2026, X started selling a bundle of X, Grok and the coding tool Cursor. Its Plus plan, at $8 a month, includes the Premium checkmark and advanced analytics. The $30 Premium plan adds a "higher reply boost", and Super ($100) and Ultra ($200) come with more AI usage. Existing Premium subscribers can keep their plan. For growth on X alone, Plus and the old Premium tier cost the same.
What X says Premium does for replies
X's help center is specific about where the preference applies: in conversations, meaning the replies under a post. It says people will see "a slight preference for replies from verified accounts", and that X is still testing how much weight Premium subscribers get against the other factors it ranks replies on, such as relevance and credibility.
So the checkmark helps a reply rank a little higher under someone else's post. It doesn't make a weak reply good. Under posts from accounts with more than 250,000 followers, X's published code also has Grok score each reply on a 0 to 3 scale, and the lowest-rated replies get a label that marks them down, checkmark or not.
X doesn't publish the service that orders replies, so nobody outside X knows how big "slight" is. The reply model in its repository does take the reply author's verification status as an input, alongside things like whether the original poster liked or answered the reply. Its effect is learned, not a fixed multiplier.
What the ranker shows for your own posts
Nothing, for subscribers. X open-sourced its current For You ranker in January 2026, and the inputs it scores posts on have no verified or subscription field. The ranker uses subscriptions only to hide subscriber-only posts from people who haven't subscribed.
That's a change from Twitter's 2023 code, which multiplied blue-verified authors' scores by 4 in their followers' feeds and by 2 everywhere else. That boost was gone by July 2023.
Premium does count somewhere in the 2026 code: X's account reputation score starts from Premium accounts and recent likes and reposts, and a high score exempts an account from some spam labels. That's protection from being marked down, not a lift.
What else changes when you subscribe
- Higher posting caps. X's limits page caps unverified accounts at 50 original posts and 200 replies a day. If your growth plan is mostly replies, that's a real ceiling.
- Analytics. X's detailed account analytics come with a subscription. A free Professional Account gets 28 days of account analytics.
- Longer posts and editing. Useful, but not for growth on their own. A long post still has to earn the read.
What Premium doesn't do
- Lift your posts in For You. See above.
- Keep the checkmark while you tinker. Changing your photo, display name or handle removes it until X reviews the account again, and you can't make further changes during the review.
- Guarantee the checkmark at all. X needs a display name, a profile photo, a confirmed phone number, activity in the last 30 days and no signs of spam or manipulation. It can also remove the checkmark at any time without a refund.
- Mean verified everywhere. In the EEA, after a European Commission decision in December 2025, X labels these accounts "Premium" rather than "verified".
Getting paid: Original Content Rewards
X retired Creator Revenue Sharing in September 2026 and replaced it with Original Content Rewards. If a growth video quotes 2,000 verified followers or 5 million impressions, it's describing the old program. To apply now, you need:
- an active Premium or Premium+ subscription (or Plus and up on The X Subscription), so Basic isn't enough
- at least 500 verified followers
- at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, not counting impressions on your replies
- to be 18 or over, in a supported country, with an account in good standing
- to post original content
Meeting the requirements gets you an application, not a place. X reviews it, you get one appeal, and after that you can reapply in 42 days.
How it pays. On qualified impressions: unique views from Premium users in the Home Timeline, with at least half the post on screen. Payouts come every two weeks with a $30 minimum. US creators are paid through X Money, everyone else through Stripe.
What doesn't count. Copied or lightly changed posts, compilations of other people's content, reposts from other platforms, posts made by automated means, posts with a helpful Community Note, and posts only about monetization itself. Asking people over and over to like, reply or follow can get you removed.
What it pays. X has never published per-creator earnings, so the weekly figures in growth videos are their authors' own. The last total X shared was in March 2024: more than $45 million to more than 150,000 creators since the program started, which averages about $300 each over roughly eight months. Individual payouts vary enormously: MrBeast reported $263,655 for a single video in January 2024 and still called the payout "a bit of a facade".
When it's worth paying
- You reply to bigger accounts most days. Try Basic for a month. It's the cheapest way to get reply prioritization. Compare how your replies do against the month before.
- You want the checkmark or plan to apply for payouts. You need Premium or Plus. Set your name, photo and handle first.
- You'd hit the posting caps. 200 replies a day is a lot, but heavy repliers do reach it.
- You mostly post and rarely reply. The case is weak. Nothing in the ranker lifts your posts for paying, and your time is better spent replying. Our guide to growing on X from zero covers what does help.
Where Shaflex fits
Shaflex publishes to X through X's official API on every plan, with or without Premium. It keeps each X post within 280 characters and sends a longer draft as a thread that every reader can open in full, so it doesn't use Premium's 25,000-character posts; write those in X itself. The replying, which is where Premium actually helps, happens in X, and on Creator and up Shaflex's Replies inbox gathers the replies to your own posts so none go unanswered.

Questions readers ask
How much is X Premium in 2026?
In the US, X's help center lists Basic at $3 a month ($32 a year), Premium at $8 ($84 a year) and Premium+ at $40 ($395 a year), on the web. Prices vary by country and app store. Since October 2026 X also sells The X Subscription, a bundle with Grok and Cursor: Plus at $8 a month includes the checkmark, and plans run up to $200 a month.
Does X Premium boost your reach?
It boosts replies, not your own posts. X says replies from verified accounts get a slight preference in conversations, and each higher tier gets more of it. X's open-source For You ranker has no subscriber boost; Twitter's 2023 code multiplied blue-verified authors' scores by 4 for followers and 2 for everyone else, but that was removed within months.
How many followers do you need to get paid on X?
500 verified followers, plus 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, a Premium subscription, and approval of your application. That's Original Content Rewards, which replaced Creator Revenue Sharing in September 2026. Payouts are based on impressions from Premium users, come every two weeks, and start at $30.
How much do creators earn on X?
X has never published per-creator earnings. The figures in growth videos are self-reported. The last total X shared was in March 2024: more than $45 million paid to more than 150,000 creators since the program began, which is an average of about $300 each over roughly eight months.
Do you lose the checkmark if you change your profile?
For a while. Changing your profile photo, display name or handle removes the blue checkmark until X reviews the account again, and you can't make further changes during the review. Set up your profile before you subscribe.
