Shaflex

Profile banner maker for X, LinkedIn, Bluesky and Mastodon

Make a header or cover image in a colour, a gradient or your own photo, add a line or two of text, and see where your profile photo, name and buttons will sit on it, on a computer and on a phone. Your text stays clear of all of them, and the file comes out at the size each network asks for.

Runs in your browser. Your text and images never leave it.

Made for

X header photo: 1500 × 500 pixels. Threads doesn't have a banner. A Threads profile shows your photo, name, bio and links, and nothing across the top.

Measured on the live site. On x.com the header shows whole at 600 × 200, and the profile photo, a 136 px circle 16 px from the left, hangs half over its bottom edge. Business accounts get a rounded square instead.

Making your banner

  • X doesn't publish a size limit for headers, so we keep it under 2 MB, the limit X gives for profile photos.

Made on your device, never uploaded.

X banner, 1500 by 500 pixels.

How to make a profile banner

  1. Pick the network. The size, the file cap and what covers the banner all follow it.
  2. Pick a background: one colour, a gradient you start from a preset and tune, or your own photo. Drag the photo to place it, and zoom in if you like.
  3. Write a headline and, if you want, a line under it. The text goes in the space nothing covers, and shrinks to fit.
  4. Switch between Computer and Phone to see what covers the banner on each, then download it.

Banner sizes for X, LinkedIn, Bluesky and Mastodon

Each banner comes out at the size its network asks for. These are the same numbers our image resizer and size guides use, from each network's help pages or code.

A LinkedIn banner on your profile and a LinkedIn Page's cover aren't the same shape, so they're two choices in the maker. Threads doesn't have a banner at all.

The safe zone: what covers your banner

Every network puts your profile photo over the bottom left of the banner, and some crop the edges or add buttons on top, differently on a computer and on a phone. The maker draws all of it over your preview and keeps your text clear of every zone on both screens at once.

Bluesky and Mastodon publish their apps' code, so their zones are read straight from it. X and LinkedIn don't. For X's website and LinkedIn's company Pages we measured the layout in a browser, on a computer and at phone width. LinkedIn only shows personal profiles to signed-in members, and X's app can't be measured that way, so those are estimates from screenshots, and the maker labels them as estimates. Layouts change, so leave a little room.

Banner backgrounds that work

  • A gradientis the quickest background that doesn't look empty. Two close colours read as calm; three give it a sunset. A radial gradient glows from the middle, which suits centred text.
  • A photoworks when its busy part sits where nothing covers it. Drag it so faces and details stay out of the profile photo's corner, and darken it if the text gets lost.
  • For LinkedIn, quiet backgrounds sit better than busy ones: your photo, name and headline sit right under the banner, and a loud one fights them.
  • One colouris fine too. Match it to your profile photo's background and the two read as one piece.

Text people can read

A banner shows small on a phone, so keep it to a few words. The maker checks the contrast between your text and the background right behind it, where it's weakest, against the web's accessibility guidelines: at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text like a headline. Auto picks light or dark text, whichever reads better.

How the file is saved

The banner is drawn at the network's full size in your browser and saved as a PNG or a JPEG. A JPEG starts at quality 85 and steps down to 25 until it's 5% under the network's cap, and it never shrinks the picture. A PNG has no quality to lower, so if one comes out too big, it's saved as a JPEG and the maker tells you.

X doesn't publish a file cap for headers, so we hold X headers to the cap it gives for profile photos. Nothing you make is uploaded: the photo, the text and the file stay on your device.

Can Shaflex set my profile banner?

No. Shaflex doesn't set profile banners: you upload the file yourself, in each network's profile settings. What it does is the posts people see under the banner. You write one draft, Shaflex fits it to Threads, X, Bluesky, Mastodon and LinkedIn, splits it into a thread where it runs long, and posts it when you've scheduled it.

Questions

What size is a LinkedIn banner?

1584 × 396 pixels for the cover image on your profile, as a JPEG or PNG under 8 MB. A company Page's cover is 1512 × 256 pixels, under 3 MB. Your profile photo sits over the bottom left of the profile banner, so keep text to the middle or the right.

What size is an X (Twitter) header, and where's the safe zone?

X recommends 1500 × 500 pixels. X says about 60 pixels at the top and 60 at the bottom may be cut off on some screens, and your profile photo covers the bottom left. Turn on the safe zones in the maker and it keeps your text out of all of that, on a computer and on a phone.

What size is a Bluesky or Mastodon banner?

Bluesky crops banners to 3:1, and the maker saves them at 2000 × 667 pixels, under 1 MB. Mastodon's header size is 1500 × 500 pixels, under 8 MB. Both put your avatar over the bottom left.

Does Threads have a banner?

No. A Threads profile shows your photo, name, bio and links, with nothing across the top, so there's no banner to make.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. It's read, drawn and saved in your browser. Nothing leaves your device, and there's nothing to sign up for.

Why did my PNG come out as a JPEG?

A PNG of a detailed photo can be bigger than the network takes. When it is, the maker saves a JPEG instead, at the highest quality that fits, and tells you so. Colours and gradients stay small as PNGs.

Can Shaflex set my banner for me?

No. Shaflex doesn't set profile banners. You upload the file yourself, in each network's profile settings. Shaflex schedules your posts.

A good banner, then the posts under it.

Shaflex fits one draft to Threads, X, Bluesky, Mastodon and LinkedIn and schedules it, so the profile behind your banner keeps moving.
