Threads image sizes

The image rules Meta publishes for Threads, what happens to a photo that's too wide or too narrow, and a resizer that makes one that fits.

Threads image sizes at a glance

Meta documents two placements for Threads: a post's image and a carousel. It doesn't publish a profile photo or link preview size, so we don't guess one.

Threads image sizes by placement
PlacementWe makeShapeFile sizeFormats
Post image1,440 px wide at mostNot documented8 MBJPEG, PNG
Carousel1,440 px wide at mostNot documented8 MBJPEG, PNG

1,440 px is as wide as it gets

Threads scales any image wider than 1,440 px down to 1,440, and stretches anything narrower than 320 px up to 320. So a 4,000 px photo only costs you upload time: Threads throws the extra pixels away. Under 320 px, it'll look soft.

The tallest or widest shape it takes is 10:1. Inside that, Meta doesn't say how the feed crops a photo, so the resizer keeps your image's own shape unless you pick another one.

File size and format

Each image can be up to 8 MB, as a JPEG or PNG, the two formats Meta calls officially supported. We read 8 MB as 8,000,000 bytes, the stricter way to count it, and aim a little under that.

Carousels

A carousel holds 2 to 20 items: images, videos or a mix. Every image in it follows the single-image rules, so 8 MB, JPEG or PNG, and 1,440 px wide at most.

Meta doesn't document how a carousel handles images of different shapes. If you want a tidy row, give them all the same one: pick Square, Portrait or Landscape in the resizer and run each image through it.

Alt text on Threads

Each image takes alt text of up to 1,000 characters through Meta's API. Meta doesn't say how it counts them, so the resizer counts the strictest way: most emoji count as two.

Say what's in the picture and why it's in the post. Write it in the box beside the resizer, copy it, and paste it in when you add the image to your post.

Why we make these sizes

  • Post image and Carousel. Threads scales anything wider than 1,440 px down to 1,440, so a wider file only adds bytes. Keep your own shape: Meta doesn't document a feed crop.

Does Shaflex check my images for Threads?

Yes. Shaflex checks every image you attach against Threads' media rules as you add it, along with the rules of the other networks the draft goes to. If a network can't take an image, the post still goes to the networks that can, with a note saying why. The image editor works inside your draft: crop to a network's size, put a screenshot in a device or on a backdrop, and blur what's private.

Where these rules come from

Each one is from the network's own documentation, help pages or source code. We last checked them on .

Questions

What size should a Threads image be?

Up to 1,440 px wide. Threads scales anything wider down to 1,440 px and enlarges anything narrower than 320 px, so a JPEG or PNG 1,440 px wide and under 8 MB is as good as it gets.

What's the file size limit for Threads images?

8 MB per image, in Meta's Threads API docs. Keep each one under 8,000,000 bytes to be safe.

How many images can one Threads post have?

Up to 20 in a carousel, and you can mix images and videos in it.

Does Threads crop images in the feed?

Meta doesn't document a feed crop for Threads. It takes shapes up to 10:1. If you post something very tall or wide, keep the subject away from the edges.

What size is a Threads profile picture?

Meta doesn't publish one for Threads, so we don't list one, and the resizer doesn't offer a Threads profile photo either.
